St Charles College vs Hilton College:
While Game Day against Hilton College was full of action, we also had some notable performances during the week from our athletes, competing in the Aquellé Series and our Squash players who are taking part in the Top 8 league.
The coveted Team of The Week award which is announced every Tuesday by the College’s Principal, Mr Allen van Blerk, has many contenders this week.
1st team golf, for their outstanding performance against Michaelhouse at the manicured Bosch Hoek Golf Club; U14A basketball for a pulsating fixture which was decided by a 3-pointer on the final hooter; the SCC Estates team, led by international pitch curator, Evan Flint, for producing magnificent wickets despite all the rain; our U15A cricket team for showing exceptional courage and bonding as a team after a character-testing tour to the Western Cape – enjoying some great domestic results and finally, the team of boys who volunteered and served at the Midmar Mile over the course of the weekend. It has been another special week of sport for the boys in Blue and Gold.

First XI Secure Convincing Victory at Hilton College
On Saturday, the St Charles College First XI travelled to Hilton College to take on their rivals at the renowned Hart-Davis Oval. Despite a week of uncertain weather, the field was in pristine condition, and the pitch—though slightly on the slower side—offered a fair grass cover. Both teams were eager to bowl first, knowing that early morning conditions might provide some assistance to the bowlers. St Charles College captain, Rico Honiball, called correctly at the toss and opted to field first under clear skies.
Disciplined Bowling Restricts Hilton to 112
The opening bowlers set out with an aggressive intent, but Hilton’s top order started well, taking advantage of any loose deliveries in the initial six overs. With runs flowing freely, Hilton looked in control early on. However, Rajah provided the much-needed breakthrough, dismissing Ogilby, Hilton’s dangerous opener. He nearly struck again soon after, creating another chance that was unfortunately put down at second slip.
At the end of the powerplay, Hilton had built a promising platform, scoring at a healthy rate of 4.5 runs per over. But the momentum soon shifted when St Charles College introduced spin into the attack. Caleb Sharp, bowling his left arm spin with excellent control, immediately put Hilton’s middle order under pressure. Meanwhile, Ryan Clarke’s medium-fast seam bowling complimented the spin attack perfectly, drying up the scoring opportunities. The duo worked in tandem to choke Hilton’s run rate, forcing mistakes from the batsmen.
As wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals, Hilton struggled to regain momentum. Any hopes of a late surge were dashed when off-spinner Kaiyuran Naidoo cleaned up the tail with precision. He took two wickets in two balls, setting himself up for a hat-trick in the next 50-over game. Hilton College was bowled out for a modest total of 112 runs, a score well below par given the conditions.
A Measured Chase Seals the Win
After the lunch break, St Charles College began their chase with confidence but found themselves on the back foot early. Opener Thando Zama fell in the very first over, caught brilliantly by a Hilton fielder, giving the hosts an early boost. Rico Honiball, however, remained composed at the crease, stabilising the innings despite wickets falling around him.
Hilton’s bowlers fought hard, taking four more wickets and applying pressure on the visitors. But Rajah, having already made an impact with the ball, stepped up once again with the bat. His well-constructed innings ensured that St Charles College reached the target comfortably, securing a five-wicket victory for the men in Blue and Gold.

This impressive win marks another strong performance for St Charles College as they approach the final weeks of the summer season. The team showcased resilience, sharp bowling, and composed batting under pressure. With form on their side, they’ll be looking to carry this momentum into their remaining fixtures.

The Saints travelled up the hill this weekend to take on long-time rivals, Hilton College.
With Hilton having won the two previous encounters, the visitors were looking to get a victory away from home. In front of a capacity crowd, the two teams exchanged blows. Hilton’s aggressive get-to-the-basket tactic paid dividends with numerous fast break opportunities and free throws because of fouls.
The Saints kept it close throughout with solid execution on their offensive sets; however, it was Hilton College who were able to hold their nerve longer, opening a 9-point lead in the 4th quarter. While the Saints continued to battle and pulled the game back to within 5 points in the closing seconds, it was not enough as Hilton handed the young Saints team their first loss of the term.
St Charles College will look to bounce back this coming weekend against DHS before heading to St John’s JHB for the biggest schoolboy basketball tournament of the season.
