Michaelhouse lost to Kearsney College 2-3

Kearsney offered another week of pulsating hockey action when they travelled to Michaelhouse on Friday. The visitors scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to give themselves a comfortable lead and send silence through the host school’s stands.

Kearsney scored off the first passage of play in a well-executed penalty corner by captain Matthew Mendes de Oliveira. Liam Johnson added to his goal tally with a deflection on the penalty spot in a fast-paced set play, while Bonga Maphanga finished off a precise counter attack with his shot trickling into the centre of the goals.

The hosts had a few opportunities, but only made it count in the last play of the first half, finishing off an initial save from Yuvaan Arbee in goals.

Kearsney seemed to take their foot off the gas in the third period of play, being wasteful in possession and allowing Michaelhouse back into the game.

The final chukka was a tense battle. Michaelhouse scored their second with five minutes left in the game. The home crowd rallied behind their team who were unable to penetrate Kearsney’s defence for an equaliser.

The final whistle brought relief for the visitors, having endured wave after wave of attack, to keep the score at 3-2 in favour of Kearsney.
