Glenwood 1st XV lost 22-25 to Kearsney College 1st XV

In a thrilling and tightly contested match on a rainy Glenwood old boys’ day, Kearsney College secured a memorable victory against their hosts. Despite the wet conditions, both teams displayed remarkable skill and determination throughout the game.

Kearsney got off to a strong start, through a Cameron Veenstra penalty and two tries from Valentino Lenge and Connor McIntyre, to give Kearsney a 17-0 lead. Glenwood managed to score in the final play of the first half, which took the half-time score to 17-7 in Kearsney’s favour.

In the second half Kearsney kicked another penalty and after much pressure the ball was moved to the edge, with Qhamani Mlalandle dotting down in the corner, to give Kearsney a 10-point lead.

Known for their resilience, however, Glenwood fought back valiantly. Despite facing a deficit, they rallied and narrowed the gap, showing their strength and determination on the field. With the match hanging in the balance, Glenwood scored a crucial try late in the second half, to take the score to a tense 25-22 in favour of Kearsney.

As the clock ticked down, the pressure intensified; and with just four minutes remaining, Kearsney faced a pivotal moment with a kickable penalty. Instead of opting for a safe three points, they chose to maintain territorial pressure, demonstrating confidence in their abilities. Glenwood managed to turn over the ball, winning themselves a scrum just outside their own 22.

Despite Glenwood’s efforts to gain territory and get themselves within kickable distance, Kearsney’s defence held firm, thwarting their opponents’ advances and securing a hard-fought victory.

The final whistle signalled Kearsney’s first triumph against Glenwood since 2013, marking a historic moment for the team and their supporters. It was testament to their resilience, teamwork and unwavering determination in the face of adversity, earning them a well-deserved victory in particularly challenging conditions.
