HOCKEY
Kearsney 1st drew with Westville 1st 0 – 0
On Friday Kearsney hosted local rivals Westville Boys’ High, in a game where the spoils where shared in a nil-all stalemate.
Kearsney seemed to weather their rivals’ storm in the first half, as scoring opportunities were few and far between, with wasteful ball possession. A patient Westville side were eager to get the momentum swaying in their direction with constant pressure throughout the first half. The visitors had the opportunity to take the lead through a penalty stroke, when goalkeeper Spaso Curach illegally stopped a goalscoring opportunity. Fortunately for him, the goalpost came to his rescue.
The second half seemed to ignite a fire in Kearsney. Renewed vigour to hold onto the ball could be seen in wave after wave of attack. A solid penalty corner defensive unit from the visitors saw four attempts stopped at the end of the third period of play to keep the score even.
Both teams threw everything at the other in their final 15 minutes of play, with both goalkeepers needing to step up, making game-defining saves. The local derby came to an end of what was a highly entertaining display of hockey.
