St Charles College Sport

On Saturday 3 August the Saints hosted their annual sevens rugby tournament for u18 and under 15 teams. The tournament was well supported.

Saints played their first game at 08:00 against Clifton College from Durban. In a reversal of the result from two weeks ago at Clifton, the boys in Blue & Gold fired on all cylinders, scoring from the kick off, running in four tries in each half. The next pool game was Michaelhouse B side. The visitors played a good brand of 7’s, looked after the ball well and managed to score the first try of the match. The Saints upped their game and manged six tries by the end of the game, winning comfortably. Game three for the hosts was against Kearsney College 1st team. Once again Saints were clinical, scoring six tries to Kearsney’s one. In the last pool game Saints played against Hilton College 1st team. In a well contested match Saints managed five unanswered tries winning comfortably and ending top of pool 1.

In pool 2 Westville and Michaelhouse had a great morning of 7’s, Westville edging out Michaelhouse by two tries to one, with the Saints 2nd team ending third in the pool.

The Cup Final was a repeat of last year’s final, with Saints and Westville playing for the trophy. The Blue & Gold started like a house on fire and scored two quick tries. Westville upped their game, and the halftime score was level at two tries a piece. The second half started with Saints scoring first and Westville catching up, scores were level going into the final minute. Westville took their chance and scored to win the cup 28 – 21. It was a great game of 7’s rugby and congratulations to Westville on their victory.

Water polo:

Over the weekend the U15 water polo boys participated in the inaugural Curro Hillcrest U15 Tournament, showcasing their abilities in front of a supportive crowd.

The tournament kicked off with a challenging encounter against Reddam Umhlanga, where our team faced a shaky start and narrowly lost by 2 goals. However, they quickly regrouped and showed their determination in subsequent matches. They swept through their pool games the following day with victories against Curro Hillcrest, Amanzimtoti, and Thomas More. The success was attributed to maintaining defensive structures, displaying composure under pressure, and executing strategic counterattacks effectively.

The semi-final proved to be a nail-biter, with the score tied at 4 goals each heading into the final chukka. Undeterred, the boys in Blue & Gold maintained their composure and turned the tide decisively, clinching an 8-4 victory and securing a spot in the finals.

The final match brought them face-to-face once more with Reddam Umhlanga, setting the stage for a gripping showdown. With the score tied entering the final chukka, the Saints team dug deep, showcasing robust defense and seizing opportunities on the counterattack. Their efforts paid off as they secured a hard-fought victory, redeeming their earlier loss and emerging victorious.  Special commendations are due to team captain Dane Allardice, who’s scoring prowess was instrumental throughout the tournament. Additionally, goalkeeper Bryce Hoskins deserves recognition for his exceptional saves that kept our opponents at bay and preserved our advantage on the scoreboard.
