Sports Report: Michaelhouse vs St Charles College

kearsney College

It’s been 95 years since St Charles and Michaelhouse first met on the playing field; and Saturday was a tremendous celebration of almost a century of good, clean schoolboy rivalry. The day was a particularly good one for the hosts, Michaelhouse who’ll be happy with a confidence boosting set of results ahead of the final fixture of the regular winter sport season against even older rivals, Hilton College, next weekend.

Hockey:

The Michaelhouse Hockey Club delivered a solid set of results clinching two of the three headline fixtures with wins for the first (3-1) and U16A (4-1) XIs. The House U14A lads went down in a fighting 0-2 affair. Four more wins, three draws – including a 2-2 arm wrestle in the second XI game – and two more draws drew the curtain on the day’s hockey fixtures.

Rugby:

Down the avenue the rugby results were all going the way of the hosts in staggered fixtures against St Charles, Maritzburg College, and Curro, Hillcrest. The home side age group teams enjoyed a clean sweep with comfortable wins for the U14A (49-0), U15A (47-7) and U16A (50-0) units. House’s fourths and fifths paved the way for the third XV who were well and truly back in the saddle with their enjoyable 35-5 victory over Curro’s first XV. A measured 29-10 win for the Michaelhouse second XV and a solid 54-12 victory of the Scottsville team brought an end to the penultimate weekend on the winter sport programme.
