Sports News from Kearsney College vs St Albans

Rugby:

St Albans 1st XV lost 9-59 to Kearsney 1st XV

The last week of Kearsney’s official rugby season saw the One-Stripe travel to Pretoria to take on an in-form St Alban’s College.

The hosts started the game with a really physical approach by their forwards pack, to take the lead through a penalty. Kearsney were next to score through Bukho Hlwatika, followed by a further two penalties from St Albans, for the hosts to lead 9-5 heading into the last five minutes of the first half.

However, in a five-minute blitz from Kearsney, they scored three times through Hlwatika (2) and Lwandle Mkhize, to suddenly be leading 20-9 at the break.

The second half started at the same pace and the visitors remained ruthless in their try-scoring pursuit. In all a further seven tries were scored through Nhlanhla Ndlovu, Doan Nel, Lwazi Mbebe, Fynn Verbaan, Oliver Ludwig and a further pair by Hlwatika.

Some solid defense saw the One-Stripe keep St Albans scoreless in the second half, to finish the game as 59-9 victors.

This was an impressive performance from Kearsney College. It brought their season to an end with two wins, having beaten St Stithians 26-25 in a nail-biting finish the previous weekend.

St Albans 1st X1 lost 0-3 to Kearsney 1st X1

Kearsney College travelled to Pretoria over the weekend to play St Alban’s College whose season had produced a decent set of results.

The visitors started the game strongly and were quickly 2-0 up in the first chukka, after being clinical in the circle and playing to their strengths.  Keegan de Jager scored two drag flicks from penalty corners which Kearsney forced their opponents to concede.

Kearsney remained calm under pressure when St Albans broke forward to attack, as the hosts never really looked threatening when doing so.

Although Kearsney created a number of opportunities over the rest of the game, they had to wait until the final minute to extend their lead, when De Jager slotted another drag flick for his hat-trick.

The visitors would have been exceedingly happy to come away with a 3-0 win.  It meant Kearsney ended the season with victories over two strong opponents, having beaten St Stithians 3-2 the previous weekend.
