Maritzburg College 1st XV beat Kearsney 1st XV 35-20

On Saturday Kearsney’s One-Stripe faced a formidable Maritzburg College team on their Old Boys Reunion Weekend.

College was first on the board with a well-executed try from counter attack which saw them dot down to the left of the uprights.  The try was converted for College to lead 7-0 after four minutes.

After some solid defensive work off a College lineout, Kearsney was on the board from a well-taken penalty by Lwazi Mbebe; but an error from the restart saw the visitors penalised, taking College to a lead of 10-3 after 13 minutes.

It was then the turn of Kearsney to strike with a superb try by Doan Nel which he dotted down to the right of the uprights after a lineout strike. The try was converted by Mbebe, putting the teams level at 10-10 heading into the last five minutes of the first half.

A handling error from Kearsney saw College pounce and score a try against the run of play. Mbebe then kicked a further penalty, for College to lead 17-13 at half-time.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first. College crossed the chalk in the third minute and Kearsney responded almost immediately to be trailing 22-20 just 12 minutes into the second half.

Furious play ensued over the next 10 minutes, with College kicking two further penalty goals, to lead 28-20. Despite some positive passages of play, Kearsney did not score again.  College, however, had one more try in them and kicked a turnover ball across the defensive line, to get the bounce and run in for a final 35-20 score.

It was a really physical encounter. Both teams are to be congratulated for providing an entertaining afternoon for the thousands of spectators there to witness the occasion.

Maritzburg College 1st X1 beat Kearsney 1st X1 4-1

Kearsney travelled to play a spirited Maritzburg College 1st XI on their Old Boys Reunion Weekend. This was going to be a match where either team needed to score in quick succession to assert their dominance in the game.

After a number of matches this season, both teams would have had a fairly good idea of how the other team played. Two unforced Kearsney errors saw them go two goals down in the first 30 minutes, with the visitors able to bounce back just before half-time, to make the score 2-1 at the break.

Kearsney had their fair share of opportunities to equalise, but an incredible breakaway counter-attack goal by Maritzburg College saw the lead stretch to 3-1. Kearsney looked slightly deflated by this goal against the run of play.

In the final quarter Kearsney had two penalty corners to claw back into the game; but a late goal, with under five minutes to play, saw College move to 4-1. This put a win completely out of reach for the young Kearsney side.
