In many way’s soccer plays second fiddle to several of the other sporting codes and some would say the poor state of South Africa’s soccer can be directly traced to the lacklustre approach that is sometime given to the sport at the school level.
Just try getting soccer fixtures, never mind results from the various schools around the country and you soon realise that there is plenty of room for improvement when it comes to marketing the sport in the high schools.
Make no doubt there is plenty of talent in the schools and eagerness by players and coaches alike to have soccer raised to the same level as rugby or cricket and it is our hope that we can soon see schools organising their soccer fixtures and marketing this sport in the same way that rugby enjoys.
KwaZulu-Natal High Schools’ Football Association is arguably one of the most structured bodies in the sport at this level and they have made a genuine attempt to provide school soccer players an opportunity to have a well run set of fixtures in the window period between the end of rugby season and the start of the cricket season.
Several tournaments have also been played in KZN which has provided most of the schools in the KZNHSFA to play against each other.
Having made use of the results played thus far by the KZN teams and entering them into the ranking system it is Westville Boy’s High that are on top of the table having consistently played some enterprising soccer. It is also encouraging to see three ‘traditionally rugby schools’ in Westville, Glenwood and Maritzburg College occupying the top three positions after what was perhaps an average rugby year for those schools.
