The first Fairtree SA School Sports First XI Cricket Rankings of the season are now live — and as always, they arrive early enough to spark debate and late enough to be meaningful.
Let’s be clear from the outset:
These rankings are a performance index, not a log table.
They are an early snapshot, not a final judgement.
Minimum matches requirement
At this stage of the season, only schools that have played three or more First XI fixtures are included.
Schools with fewer than three matches will be added as soon as sufficient data is available.
How to read these rankings properly
The rankings are built to answer a simple but important question:
“How strong is this First XI relative to others, based on what they’ve actually done on the field?”
They take into account:
- Who you played (strength of opposition)
- How you won or lost (runs, wickets, competitiveness)
- Consistency across matches, not isolated results
A comfortable win against weaker opposition will never be valued the same as a competitive performance against a strong First XI — and that is entirely deliberate.
Early season = movement
Because the season is still young:
- Fixture difficulty varies widely
- Weather and formats differ
- Some schools have already faced elite opposition
As a result, movement in the rankings will be more noticeable in the early weeks. This is normal and expected. Over time, as more fixtures are played and shared opponents link teams together, the rankings stabilise naturally.
What the rankings reward — and what they don’t
The system is designed to reward:
- Schools willing to play as strong an opposition as possible
- Competitive cricket, even in defeat
- Consistent performance over time
It is not designed to reward:
- Scoreline chasing
- Fixture padding
- One-off results
This philosophy has guided SA School Sports rankings for more than two decades, across multiple sporting codes.
An open invitation to coaches
The rankings are transparent, structured, and defensible — but they are also open to genuine enquiry.
As always if a coach would like:
- A breakdown of how points were allocated
- Clarification on a specific fixture
- An explanation of how results impact ranking position
You are welcome to get in touch directly.
Constructive questions are always encouraged.
Final reminder
These rankings are not about Week 1 bragging rights.
They are about measuring strength fairly as the season unfolds.
