Maritzburg College – Weekly Sports ReportMaritzburg College enjoyed a highly competitive and rewarding week of sporting fixtures, delivering strong performances across cricket, basketball, water polo, cycling, golf, tennis, athletics and more. The programme included tightly contested match-ups against long-standing rivals Durban High School (DHS), as well as participation in national festivals.
BASKETBALL SUCCESS VS DHS (13–14 February)
College basketball teams recorded an excellent weekend of results, particularly across the senior age groups. The 1st team led the charge with an impressive 81–70 victory, supported by commanding wins from the 2nd to 5th teams. With further wins for the 15A and 14A sides, College secured 12 wins from 16 games, marking another outstanding all-round performance.
1st Team Report – Mr Jacques Wilcock (MIC and Head Coach)
The 1st team took on a strong DHS outfit fresh from a dominant victory over Northwood. Both teams came out firing, producing an action-packed opening quarter that ended 27–17 in College’s favour.
Despite DHS applying increasing pressure in the middle quarters, College remained composed and entered the final quarter with momentum.
Outstanding offensive contributions from M. Ntlakana (21 points), N. Mbele (17) and W. Makhanda
(14) helped secure a hard-fought 81–70 win—an excellent result against tough opposition.
U16A at the St Stithians Tournament
The U16A team represented College with pride at the St Stithians U16 Basketball Tournament. A rain-affected first day limited them to one fixture—a 23–20 win over Michael Mount—before strong performances on day two saw victories over Kingswood and St Alban’s to top their pool.
After a determined 43–31 quarterfinal win over Hilton, the rapid turnaround before the semifinal proved challenging, and the team eventually went down 31–41. College finished 4th overall, with A. Shandu named in the tournament All-Star team.
CRICKET ROUND-UP
College cricket teams produced a balance of dominant victories, standout individual performances and valuable learning opportunities throughout the week.
Fixtures vs Durban High School (13–14 February)
College’s age-group sides excelled, particularly at home venues.
Highlights included:
- 2nd XI: A commanding 115-run victory, led by Kats (66) and Schoeman (52).
- 3rd XI: An 83-run win powered by impressive bowling from Zakwe (3–16) and Dunne (2–14).
- 15A: A superb 10-wicket
- 14A: A brilliant 105* from Bruyns before rain ended
Clifton T20 Festival (13–15 February)
College’s senior squad faced tough opposition in SCC, Westville, Northwood and DHS. Despite spirited efforts and close contests, College were narrowly defeated in all four fixtures.
WATER POLO RESULTS
College enjoyed strong performances in their fixtures against DHS, securing five wins from six games. The 1st team claimed a clinical 14–9 victory, the 2nd team won 7–2, and the 3rd team secured a 9–2 result. The U14A and U14B sides continued their impressive form with emphatic wins of 17–1 and 16–0 respectively.
1st Team Report – Mr Darren Sherriff (Director of Aquatics)
College started confidently at home and took an early lead. Although DHS responded with sustained pressure, the team displayed composure and tactical discipline, maintaining control throughout the match to secure a deserved 14–9 victory.
PBHS 125 Festival & Logan Stanley Festival
College’s 1st and 2nd water polo teams participated in two major festivals featuring many of the country’s strongest sides.
- The 2nd team enjoyed an outstanding run of four wins, finishing a superb 6th
- The 1st team produced brave performances in several narrow defeats, ultimately finishing 8th overall.
ATHLETICS
Maritzburg College athletes shone once again at the 2026 aQuellè Series 3 meet, finishing 1st overall for the third consecutive week against 31 schools and nearly 500 athletes. The squad achieved:
- 6 first places
- 7 second places
- 7 third places
Notable achievements included Braydon Cassels being named U13 Champion Athlete, and Theo Boshoff crowned U19 Champion Athlete. College also dominated the senior sprints and field events, taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the U19 100m, High Jump and Shot Put.
TENNIS
The College tennis teams delivered competitive results across their fixtures:
- 1st Team vs St Charles: Lost 1–3
- 2nd Team vs Hilton: Won 3–1
- 4th Team vs Riverwood: Won 3–1
DEBATING
In the opening round of Junior Debating, College’s Grade 8 teams started strongly, securing two victories, with R. Biggar named Best Speaker in his fixture. The Junior teams (College 1 and College 2) faced tougher debates and were narrowly beaten in their rounds.
CANOEING
At the SA Schools Sprints at Wembley Dam, College canoeists put forward determined performances:
- Eli Paul: 10th in the U14 500m
- Zack Thomsen: 9th in the U16 500m
CYCLING
Congratulations to Kayden Searle, who delivered an impressive ride at the Free State &
KwaZulu-Natal XCO #1 in Bethlehem, placing 4th in the Junior Men’s race, only three seconds off the winning time.
GOLF
College’s golfers produced strong results against St Charles College:
- 1stTeam:Won 6–2
- 2ndTeam:Won5–1
SUMMARY
Across all sporting codes, Maritzburg College boys once again demonstrated their resilience, discipline and competitive spirit. With multiple standout team and individual performances, as well as valuable festival exposure, the week showcased the depth of College’s sporting talent and reaffirmed its commitment to high-performance excellence.
