Maritzburg College match report against Pretoria Boys.

maritzburg college

The long-standing rivalry between Maritzburg College and Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) added another emphatic chapter this past Saturday, as College produced a commanding performance to secure a resounding 61–5 victory in the 1st XV rugby encounter.

Played in near-perfect conditions, the annual exchange once again showcased the depth and tradition of both institutions, with 26 rugby teams taking to the field over the course of the day. The main fixture, kicking off at 13:15, drew considerable attention as spectators gathered to witness one of South Africa’s most storied schoolboy rivalries.

From the outset, Maritzburg College asserted their dominance. A powerful and well-organised forward pack laid the platform through a clinical set piece, while the backs capitalised with an exciting and adventurous attacking display. Their cohesion and tempo proved too much for PBHS, allowing College to surge to a commanding 40–5 lead by halftime.

Despite making six early substitutions in the second half—providing valuable opportunities for several Grade 11 players—College showed no signs of slowing down. The fresh legs maintained the intensity, and the team continued to execute with precision, extending their lead and ultimately closing out the match at 61–5.

Vs Pretoria Boys High School Saturday 18 April

Result – Drew 1-1

Maritzburg College welcomed Pretoria Boys High School to Papes. This would be our first home fixture of the season. The buzz around the campus was electric. The PBHS team have recently come off a run of good form after hosting NOMADS in conjunction with their 125th celebration.

College would start off the better of the two scoring a goal in the first quarter through a backhand shot from Ethan Fabre from a rebound in a penalty corner. College controlled the game for large parts without scoring from the opportunities created.

The second half would see the Boys High team come out firing in search of a goal. College kept giving the ball back to PBHS as they pressed hard while chasing the game. The PBHS team scored a penalty corner in the last quarter to take the game to one all. The PBHS struggled with their discipline and suffered a number of cards, which the College boys failed to capitalize on.

The final few minutes saw opportunities at both ends of the field. The game finally ended in a draw. Well done to both teams on a hard fought battle.
