CRICKET

Westville Boys High 1st X1: 111 all out (McAllister 28; Coetzee 3/20, Khambule 3/13)

Kearsney College 1st X1: 112/5 (Veenstra 39; Shangase 2/13, Van Breda 2/19)

Kearsney College won by five wickets

Kearsney won the toss in windy, overcast conditions and elected to bowl first.  Sandiswa Yeni and Ryan Browning bowled with pace and aggression up front, and the Westville openers found scoring difficult.

Michael Groom and Murray Weyer kept up the pressure at first change and after 25 overs Westville had crept to 67/3. Enter the spinning duo of Ross Coetzee (3/20) and Asevela Khambule (3/13) and Westville were back in the hut for 111.

Injudicious shot selection was the main culprit in the Westville batting collapse and only Kaedan McAllister (28) and Max Robertson (23) offered any resistance.

Sadly, Kearsney’s Murray Weyer broke his thumb in a magnificent attempt at an improbable catch and Kearsney were down to 10 men for the chase.

Kearsney got off to a decent start in chasing a tricky total, with Cameron Veenstra making a sizeable dent in the total with his 39 off 48 balls. Kearsney were cruising at 25 overs on 83/3.  Some indeterminate bounce and excellent bowling from Roxton Payne (0/13 in 10) and Sekou Shangase (2/13) made things interesting for a spell.

However, the total they were chasing was not enough for great concern and Kearsney eventually won by five wickets with 16 overs to spare.

Earlier in the week, in a W100 match, Kearsney 1st X1 also recorded a comfortable win over Westville Boys’ High 1st X1.

BASKETBALL

Westville beat Kearsney 53-52

Kearsney travelled to Westville Boys’ High for what has become a difficult court to play on, as the Westville basketball team plays with a great deal of passion.

Both teams started slowly, with Kearsney managing to keep the score level, but towards the latter half of the quarter Westville took advantage of some long possession and caught Kearsney napping on defense; to pull away on the score board 17-12 by the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score. The status quo remained going into half-time, with Westville managing to hold on to their lead 23-18.

The third quarter was much the same, with both teams finding very few opportunities to score.

The final quarter was explosive, both teams finding their offensive rhythm. Kearsney managed to erase Westville’s lead and with two and half minutes left on the clock they took a four-point lead.

Westville look their opportunities, however, and took back the lead, managing to hold on until the final play, to run out deserving winners 53-52 in a pulsating game.

Top Performers:
