Kearsney's Ross Coetzee goes in for a DHS catch

CRICKET

DHS 1st X1: 216/9 (Haveman 51, Omar 55; O’Donovan 4/45, De Jager 1/11)

Kearsney 1st X1: 194 (Coetzee 107, De Jager 22 (35), Veenstra 12 (24); Majola 3/38)

DHS won by 22 runs

DHS won the toss and decided to bat on a belter of a track.  The game started with an interesting incident where one of the Kearsney premium opening bowlers Sandiswa Yeni bowled two beamers in his first over and was thus taken out of the attack by the umpire. This meant nine overs had to be shared amongst the rest of the team which was not ideal.

DHS, however, found themselves in some strife at 120/7. Enter Jarid Haveman who, with an undefeated 51, helped his side to a respectable 216/9. He was ably assisted by Ismael Omar with a patient 55.

The pick of the Kearsney attack was Jack O’ Donovan who took 4/45. Having done penance in the field for 50 overs in the hot sun after dropping six catches, the Kearsney batsmen were always going to be under the cosh to chase a fairly formidable total.

Bayade Majola (3/38) bowled with heat and Kearsney were soon in trouble at 55/5. Spectators were then treated to a magnificent knock of 107 off 125 balls from a majestic Ross Coetzee, who took the visitors agonisingly close to getting over the line.

Kearsney capitulated at 194 – 22 runs short in an impressive come-back. Zaid Motala 2/12 and Bhavesh Naicker 2/25 were also excellent with the ball for the jubilant DHS side.

The old adage “catches win matches” certainly haunted the Kearsney side, and significantly led to the downfall of a side that has played quality cricket in recent times

DHS 1sts beat Kearsney 1sts 57-34

Kearsney travelled to DHS for the second round of the interschools fixtures. DHS started well putting Kearsney under pressure and managed to pull away from Kearsney through some good outside shooting, making three threes in the opening quarter which ended with DHS up 17-11.

Kearsney struggled on offence, not being able to convert on the opportunities that they created. While they did play some very good defense, DHS were able to capitalise on some patient offence and continued building on their lead which was large but half time 33-17.

Kearsney continued to struggle offensively during the second half and while they managed to keep the fourth quarter close, they could not make up the large deficit and lost the match 34-57.

DHS 1st team lost 10-16 to Kearsney 1st team

With another intense counter-attacking display by Kearsney, the team established a commendable lead of 6-1 in the initial minutes, capitalising on lapses in defence by DHS. Although DHS successfully impeded Kearsney’s offensive momentum during the second half, they managed to secure several uncomplicated two-metre goals.

The constrained width of the DHS swimming pool significantly limited the centre-forward playing strategy, yet Thomas Francke of Kearsney exhibited notable proficiency by scoring one goal, obtaining four exclusions, and earning a penalty.

The diverse distribution of goal scorers shows the team’s depth, avoiding dependency on a single player. Towards the conclusion of the game, a hurried offensive approach afforded DHS additional possession time, allowing them to narrow the score gap.
