Basketball news at Kearsney
St Charles 1st team lost to Kearsney 1st team 53-60
For the final fixture of the term, Kearsney travelled to St Charles, where they have not had much success of late.
The first quarter was a tight affair. Both teams felt each other out on offense and defense, with neither gaining a significant advantage. One three points separated them by the end of the quarter, with Kearsney ahead 14 – 11.
The second quarter saw the visitors struggle to find any offensive rhythm and St Charles capitalised on this, managing to open a six-point lead 25 – 19
Some strong words at half-time by the Kearsney coach saw a renewed effort by the visiting players. They exerted more pressure on the hosts, who panicked and turned over the ball, allowing Kearsney to cut into their lead. By the end of the third quarter St Charles was only up by two points, 39 – 37.
Kearsney continued to apply pressure defensively but also found some offensive rhythm and played the best quarter of basketball they had all season. They took the lead to finish off their opponents, even as they threatened to make a run, and won the game 60 – 53.
Two Kearsney players, Connor Grenfell and Mvelo Mkhize, each received their 50th cap at Saturday, the last game of the term.
