The second round of matches at the Fasken St David’s Marist Time Cricket Festival produced three wins and five draws. St John’s beat Maritzburg College by three wickets and, after winning their first game, against St Andrew’s in the first round, they were the only team to win two out of two.
The other winners in the second round were St Stithians who beat St Andrew’s, and Waterkloof, who defeated Noordheuwel.
The wickets were clearly showing wear by the end of the fourth day, shown by the number of big hauls by the spinners. There were two six wicket hauls – by Sipho Potsane (6/63 for Jeppe vs Paul Roos) and Alec Loveland (6/30 for St John’s against Maritzburg College). A further three spin bowlers took fifers: Marcus Bakker (5/20 for Waterkloof vs Noordheuwel); Lhuan-dre Pretorius (5/53 for St Stithians vs St Andrew’s); and Callum Ritchie (5/61 for KES vs Clifton).
Two batsmen notched up centuries on the final day. St Stithians’ Richard Seletswane, who was 85 not out overnight, went on the get 108 the next day, and Kyle Swanepoel of the Lions Invitation team made 103 in his side’s second innings against St David’s
Caleb Thomas of St John’s was named the batsman of the tournament, he was the top run-scorer and hit a century and two half centuries in the two matches. The bowling prize went to Sipho Potsane of Jeppe who took the most wickets, and had the best economy rate.
