For the past 20 years, SA School Sports has proudly produced and refined the school hockey rankings — the original school sports rankings platform in South Africa. What began as a simple way to track results has grown into a trusted, nationwide benchmark for performance, prestige, and progress in the game.
As we release the 2026 Fairtree Girls U14 Hockey Rankings, we continue to celebrate the emerging talent in school hockey and build excitement around what promises to be another fiercely competitive season.
How the Rankings Are Calculated
The U14 rankings follow the same proven system that rewards consistent performance and quality opposition:
1. Match Results Matter Most
-
Wins earn valuable points
-
Draws provide smaller returns
-
Losses impact a team’s rating
Consistency and results are key to climbing the table.
2. Strength of Opposition
Not all victories are equal. Defeating a top-ranked team earns more points than beating lower-ranked sides, ensuring that performance against quality competition is rewarded.
3. Margin of Victory
-
Strong, decisive wins can boost a team’s ranking
-
Narrow losses to top teams are not heavily penalised
This approach produces a fair reflection of each team’s ability.
4. Weekly Updates
Rankings are dynamic and updated each week as new results are submitted. Every match matters, and movement in the table reflects current form.
5. Pre-Season Weighting
Teams start the season with a base rating informed by last year’s performances, but current results quickly take precedence as the season progresses.
Plenty at Stake for U14 Teams
These rankings are more than bragging rights. In 2026, qualification for two major U14 girls hockey tournaments is determined entirely by the SA School Sports Hockey Rankings:
Rhenish Top 12 Tournament
The top 12 ranked teams will earn invitations to this elite U14 competition — a stage for the country’s very best young hockey talent.

St Cyprians Rising Champions Cup
Teams ranked 13–25 qualify for the Rising Champions Cup, giving emerging sides a chance to compete, develop, and shine.

The Season Is Underway
The race for tournament qualification starts from the very first whistle. Every goal, save, and result contributes to a team’s ranking and potential invitation to these prestigious competitions. The cut-off for results to be in to qualify for the tournament is the 3rd of June 2026.
Please note: Only teams who have played a minimum of three matches are included in this week’s rankings. Many more teams will be added in the weeks ahead as more matches are played and the full picture of the season emerges.
