Clifton 2008 Water Polo Tournament

clifton

Clifton College’s water polo programme started in 2004 with an U14 group. Clifton celebrated the completion of the Aquatics Centre in 2005 by hosting the inaugural Clifton Water polo Tournament which attracts the top playing water polo schools within South Africa.

The tournament was exclusively for stayers as Clifton only fielded U14 and U15 age groups in 2005. Clifton’s 1stth position. Maritzburg College won the first Clifton water polo tournament. Clifton fielded two teams in the Kwazulu Natal B section that year where the school achieved third place in the league. In 2006 the tournament was won by St John’s and Clifton’s water polo had progressed sufficiently for them to earn 3rd place. This was a gutsy performance considering the boys were still in Grades 9 and 10. In 2006 Clifton fielded even more teams and after winning the Kwazulu Natal B section were promoted to the A section where they came 4th. In 2007 Clifton was triumphant, finally managing to win their own tournament. It had now become a 1st team tournament and was no longer a stayer’s event. Clifton, with only one matric boy in the side, came 2nd in the Kwazulu Natal A league during this year. In 2008 Clifton won the tournament again and 8 players were selected to the KZN U19A team. Clifton now fields teams across the age groups and at the time of writing is preparing to host the Top 10 tournament at their Aquatics Centre. The unique factor contributing to the success of the current team is the fact that 6 out of the starting 7 and 9 out of the squad of 13 boys completed their preparatory schooling at Clifton Prep. A fine achievement and one which speaks volumes for the water polo programme in existence at the prep school and the college. Five out of these boys were also in Clifton’s first ever 1st team in 2005. Clifton’s water polo programme continues to go from strength to strength as does their performance in the Clifton tournament hosted annually in the September holidays at the Aquatics Centre. water polo team comprising players from the U14 and U15 age groups gave a creditable account of themselves finishing in 8

Clifton hosted some of the top water polo schools in the country at their annual tournament held at the Clifton Aquatics Centre during the holidays. The tournament, played from the 1 October to the 4 October, was well supported and the boys produced some outstanding performances. After the pool matches the quarter final and semi final matches were contested before expectant supporters. Pietermaritzburg College beat St Stithians 7 - 4 and Reddam beat Parktown 5 – 3 to book their places in the semi final where they would play the two pool winners – Clifton and St Andrews.

Clifton played some impressive water polo to beat Maritzburg College 8 – 4 and Reddam secured a place in the tournament’s deciding final match by defeating a game St Andrews outfit 6 -3. The fourteen participating schools were all involved in decisive playoff matches on overcast Saturday morning. Affies, St John’s, Kearsney and St Stithians enjoyed victories over Hilton, St Albans, Grey College and Parktown respectively. Maritzburg College was involved in a nail biting 3rd/4th place encounter with St Andrews from Grahamstown. In an 11 goal thriller St Andrews won 6 -5.

Parents, coaches, boys and girls packed the Aquatics Centre for the final. Clifton were the favourites to retain the trophy but knew the lads from Cape Town would not be beaten without giving a favourable account of themselves. Clifton proved their class by winning the final 9 – 4 in front of a partisan crowd. Michael Downes, Patrick McCarthy, Mark Spencer and Nicholas Steadman were selected for the All Star team.
