Westerford and Pearson slugged it out at the National Co-Ed Schools Tournament last week and produced a thrilling final which saw Westerford narrowly nudging out Pearson 7-6 at the end. However both teams strengthened their positions on the SA Schools Water Polo Rankings.

Crawford Lonehill brushed aside all comers at the National Co-Ed Schools Tournament last week and their dominant performance earns them their first entry into the South African Schools Top 10 Rankings.

Reddam were the clear favourites going into their own Reddam House U19 Tournament last week and as the leading team in South Africa were probably expected to live up to their pedigree.

SACS were the big favourites as some of South Africa’s top teams took part in the Maitland SACS U19 Tournament in the early part of October 2014.

Water Polo: The Boy's Top 40 Rankings

The KES Water Polo Tournament was a great test to see just how good the various teams from around the country are when they are pitted against opposition that they do not usually face.

SACS demonstrated that they are the leading team in the Western Cape and arguably one of the top teams in South Africa after they won the Maitland Night Series beating Bishops in the final.

With the amount of competition in school sport these days, it is sometimes rare to find one school that is totally dominant in a particular sport and even more unique if the team hails from an all girl school.

It is a rare feat for a school athlete to be selected for the national senior side and but every so often a sensational talent comes along and rewrites the records books.

It was the Old Petrian’s Tournament hosted by St Peters College that was the main event in the past week and which saw the very best of SA teams in action.

A consistently good season so far by SACS which has seen them go unbeaten in the last nine matches has accounted for them edging into the No.1 spot in South Africa with Clifton a fraction behind them in second spot.

The SA U18 Boy & Girls Water Polo teams have been announced who will participate at the Continental Qualification Tournament for the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships.

Girls Water Polo: The Top 20 Rankings

Reddam consolidate their position at the top of the rankings this week after a very comfortable 11-0 victory over Bloemhof who struggled to pose much of a threat in a slightly one sided match on a boiling hot day.

Clifton hold on to the No.1 spot for the second week running after a successful match against Michaelhouse which saw the Durban outfit stretch their winning streak to seven matches and still unbeaten for 2014.

Although the season is still in its early stages there has been several matches played which have also included two big tournaments where most of the big names participated in.

Clifton College have for some time threatened to show just how strong a powerhouse they are in school water polo and they didn’t waste any time this year in putting on an early display of complete dominance at the Grey College Tournament.

Glenwood Water Polo

The KZN Top 10 came to a conclusion yesterday with the Glenwood junior teams performing exceptionally well.

For the 1st team it was a nightmare come true with their Goalkeeper withdrawing at the 11th hour as a result of a debilitating virus. His replacement too was unavailable due to a family tragedy and the third replacement had a broken hand. As such the team relied on the U15B Goalkeeper as well as a player to fulfil the role. Both players gave 100% effort.

The U15A team performed extremely well. In their final pool match against Clifton, the team played their best water polo with Clifton snatching a draw in the dying moments of the game. The boys then had to play DHS two hours later and although we had a 3-0 lead, the physical demands of the Clifton game took its toll and the boys weren’t able to maintain this lead and lost 4-7. In the end the team finished third overall, a superb result.

The U14A team too had a brilliant tournament. The boys played exceptional water polo and deserved their place in the final. However they were very unlucky. They led for the entire match only to be beaten by an unfortunate goal in the end.

Glenwood finished in 2nd placed in the overall standings behind Clifton, the highest position we have attained since the inception of the KZN Top 10.
