Stirling High turned up at the 2016 Co-Ed Tournament during the past week and simply blew the opposition away with a powerfully clinical display of water polo which has help keep them way out in front on the SA Schools Top 30 Rankings.

The biggest difference between water polo and most other team sports is that every player is constantly moving. Using the “eggbeater” motion of treading water, the six players and the goalie on each team must uphold the cardinal rule of water polo, which is to never touch the bottom of the pool with their feet.

The leading team in South Africa on this week’s SA School Sports Rankings is Clifton who has once again been in brilliant form in 2016.

Last weekend,St Peter’s College hosted the 12th annual Old Petrian’s water polo tournament from 19 February – 21 February 2016 for open girls. Twenty eight schools across the country and one from Zimbabwe participated in the prestigious event at the Wahoo Aquatics centre and St Peter’s Girls Prep’s pool. Water polo is a highly competitive sport, and it was pleasing to see so many schools encouraging their girls to excel in the game.

The 2016 Old Petrian’s Tournament was the showpiece event last week with several of the big names in SA School Water Polo taking part. Stirling hang on to the top spot on the SA Schools Rankings but Durban Girls College have dramatically closed the gap on them.

We have an unchanged top three on this week’s SA Schools Top 40 Rankings although Clifton have closed the gap on St John’s College as they push to finish the year strongly.

With the water polo season poised to begin we look forward to seeing if any team is able to catch Reddam who played brilliantly in the early part of 2015 to rise to the top of the SA Schools Rankings for Girls.

The water polo season resumes and already the strength of the front runners is evident from the winter fixtures and preseason matches that have already taken place. SACS at this stage take up the cudgel as the leading team on the SA Schools Water Polo Rankings but will be hotly pursued by some highly skilled teams from around the country.

Reddam Constantia has timed their season to perfection and in the final weeks of the season move into the top spot on the SA School Sports Rankings for Girls.
