Tennis: Grey College's Henning Wins

It was  a dramatic day at the U18 African Junior Championships in Morocco on Friday, 16th of March. Persistent rain meant that the boy’s singles semi-finals, as well as the final had to be played on the same day.

Two of SA’s junior stars, Lleyton Cronje and Grey College's Philip Henning, had fought bravely to reach the semi-finals and were looking to reach the showpiece final

First Lleyton Cronje lost in heart-breaking fashion in the first semi-final. In front of a partisan home crowd supporting the local Moroccan player, Lleyton showed tremendous fight but eventually lost in three tough sets.

Then Philip Henning, in the other semi-final, was 0-6 and 0-3 down but, despite a hamstring injury, fought back to win the second set 6-3 and then the decider 6-1.

Philip was then in consummate form to win the final 6-1, 6-1.

Massive congratulations to Philip for a deserved title win, but also to Lleyton who should be very proud of his efforts over the last two weeks on the North African clay - with an ITF Grade 3 title win last week and now a semi-final at the African Junior Championships.
