Cricket: Kearsney Clinch T20 Final

Match Report: Hilton vs Kearsney in T20 Final- Hilton College won the toss and put Kearsney in to bat on a good batting surface prepared for the T20 Final held at the Maritzburg Oval last night (Monday). Kearsney came out firing, but lost regular wickets with their gung-ho approach, losing the first wicket on the fourth ball of the innings.

Hilton hosted Kearsney on the return leg of a double header on a beautiful afternoon ideal for rugby. Hilton proved very motivated as they were keen to reverse the result in March when Kearsney were victorious in Botha’s Hill.

Rugby: Big Brothers, Little Brothers

You could be forgiven for  thinking that numbers nine and 10 are favourites in the Dahl and Hirschowitz families. Not surprising when big brother and little brother share the same position and jersey number on the rugby field.

Hilton College after sending a shock wave through KZN school rugby at the end of 2014 by refusing to play Glenwood have started their season off on a positive note although not a winning one.

Published in KZN

It wasn’t going to take long before old boys from both Glenwood and Hilton College joined the skirmish that has erupted over Hilton’s decision to withdraw from all rugby matches against Glenwood and so end a rivalry that started years before the Great Depression.

Published in KZN

The traditional rivalry between Glenwood and Hilton College on the rugby field is all but over and it may well stay that way for many seasons to come. We spoke exclusively to the Head Master of Glenwood, Mr. Trevor Kershaw to get his take on the situation.

Published in KZN

Glenwood and Hilton College will no longer play any rugby fixtures against each other in 2015 and perhaps for some time to come.

In a dramatic stance taken by Hilton College it looks unlikely that the two KZN teams will be competing on the rugby field for some seasons to come following an announcement from Hilton this week.

Published in KZN

The final round of fixtures for the 2nd term saw Glenwood play host to Kearsney at the UKZN rugby grounds. Having lost to the visitors 2 years in a row, the Glenwood team would have been keen to get back to winning ways.

Soccer: The KZN Top 20 Rankings

It has been a long time coming but finally we have compiled rankings for soccer although it is only for one province of the country.

Published in KZN

A season of some of the world’s best school boy rugby has all but come to a close and for the players who ran out for the last time for their school they will be left with that supreme pride that comes from wearing their teams badge and playing to their best ability. A memory that will live with them for decades.

It was a tightly fought season which saw three teams vying for the top spot almost from the start of the season and at various stages all three, Affies, Outeniqua had a taste at being the number one side in the country.

However it is perhaps fitting that it is Affies who can lay claim to the top team in South Africa after completing the season without being defeated, without drawing and winning every single match. It is a supreme effort by a side that played the country’s most powerful teams and still remained competitive scoring heavily in most of their matches.

It is perhaps a pity that somewhere along the line Affies and Paarl Gim never met, as on paper there was very little to choose between the two teams, however Gimmies were held to a surprise draw by Oakdale in what was their only ‘blemish’ on an otherwise spotless season so perhaps finishing in second spot is justified.

A strong finish by Grey College, after an indifferent start to their season put pressure on Outeniqua for the third spot, but the consistency of Outeniqua helped them to finish in the Top three after suffering just the one defeat at the hands of Paarl Gim.

It was another great season and our thanks to the thousands of players, coaches and the avid fans of schoolboy rugby that showed sustained interest in the rankings, offered advice and suggestions and supported us. Rankings are not an absolute science but by factoring in the strength of the opponents, margin of victories and the actual results it is hoped that a team’s current form can be judged.

Rugby: The SA Schools Top 100 Rankings

A high pedigree Cape School’s Week dominated proceedings in the SA School Rugby scene this past week where there were one or two surprise results and some expected victories for the big names.

Published in Rugby

Kearsney hosted Hilton in perfect playing conditions on their Founders weekend.

Kearsney showed early dominance and scored the first try in the seventh minute of the match. Fullback Chris Lines brilliantly collected a failed touch finder from Hilton and showed good pace and spatial awareness as he ran back at Hilton. From the tackle Kearsney attacked the right hand side of the field.

From the ruck Ayron Schramm received the ball and made a well-timed offload to Lines after beating a number of defenders with dazzling footwork. Tristan Tedder converted for a 7 - nil lead.

Hilton applied good pressure with very sound tactical kicking and good chase tactics which produced three first half penalties. Tedder added a penalty of his own and prop Mthunzi Moloi crashed over for a try just before halftime, for a Kearsney lead of 15-9 at the break.

The first of the three second half Kearsney tries was a spectacular counter attack from a failed Hilton punt. Ryan van der Waal, Lines, Schramm and Jean-Luc du Preez were particularly prominent, with centre Blair Cremer diving over after some good continuity play by the hosts.

The penultimate try was scored by captain Dan du Preez with his trademark close to the ruck running line. Unfortunately Tedder did not enjoy his usual productive tee-kicking day, but converted for a 27 - 9 lead.

Fittingly, man of the match Lines scored the last try from a shortened line out, receiving a flat pass from scrum half Matt Reece-Edwards and running 25m for his second try of the match. Tedder converted for a final score 34-9.

Outstanding players for the hosts were Lines, Schramm and JL du Preez.

The game ended a notable week in which Kearsney’s 1st XV captain Daniel du Preez was named as KZN Craven Week captain. It is the third season that he has been selected to play at the prestigious Craven Week, and after last year’s event he was selected for the SA Schools team.

In total six players from Kearsney College’s 1st XV will represent KZN u18 at Craven Week. Daniel will captain his twin brother and flank Jean-Luc, scrumhalf Matt Reece-Edwards, number eight Ayron Schramm, flyhalf Tristan Tedder and hooker Jordan Meaker.

Kearsney will play Maritzburg College this Thursday (20th) at 2.45pm in a re-scheduled 1st XV game following the original fixture being rained out.

Hockey: The SA School's Rankings

The top five all recorded wins over the weekend which ensured that their positions didn’t change and it is a pity that the much anticipated Kearsney v Maritzburg College had to be cancelled due to a flu epidemic.

Please note that two outstanding results for Pretoria Boy’s High have been included which had a small bearing on this week’s rankings. This weekend there is the big “Battle of the Jukskei” when Pretoria Boy’s meet St. John’s College which will give both teams a chance to move up the table.
