Umbro High Schools Football Tournament - 2017

Umbro High Schools Football Tournament.

This year 19 teams competed in 3 age divisions, namely - Boys U16, Girls U19 and Boys U19.

In the Boys U16 divi sion, 4 teams contested a round robin format with the top two teams qualifying for the final. St Stithians
topped the table on 9 points by winning all of their round robin matches. Bushbucks club from East London finished in a very
close second spot on 8 points. In the final , St Stithians and Bushbucks drew 2 all, pushing it into a penalty shootout with St
Stithians taking it 7 goals to 6. Well done to first time entrants, St Stithians, who won the Boys u/16 division for 2017 and took
home the gold medal.

The Girls U19 division was hotly contested between 7 teams playing a round robin format, with the top four qualifying for the
semi-finals. Rand Girls High comfortably topped the log on 14 points to set up the first semi -final game against Selly Park, who
finished with 8 points. In the other girls’ semi -final match, St Dominics Priory from Port Elizabeth, took on the defending champs,
Kimberly Girls High. Much to the disappointment of Kimberley Girls, St Dominics Priory won to secure the other spot in the final .
In this year’s final however, the game was played with heart , where Rand Girls and St Dominics drew 0 – 0 and then went into a
Penalty shootout with Rand Girls emerging 3 – 1 winners over St Dominic’s Priory, to take the gold for 2017. Well done to Rand
Girls High who played great football throughout the tournament!

The Boys U19 division was contested between 8 teams split into two pools of 4, playing round robin fixtures. In Pool A, Victoria
Park High from Port Elizabeth finished top on 10 points, Hatfield Christian high from Pretoria finished next with 6 points,
Pinelands High on 5 points and Selly Park unfortunately not gaining a point. In Pool B, Milnerton High from Cape Town finished
top on 9 points, Lebone College from Phokeng next with 6 points , local East London High with 3 points and St Dominics Priory
with 2 points.

The cross pool quarter-finals featured Milnerton versus Selly Park, Victoria Park versus St Dominics Priory,
Hatfield versus East London High and Lebone College versus Pinelands High. The teams victorious in the quarter-finals and
proceeding to the semis were Mi lnerton High, East London High, Pinelands High and Victoria Park High. The first semi -final saw
Milnerton winning with a 2 – 1 result over East London High, while the second semi -final between Pinelands and Victoria Park
saw Pinelands overcoming Victoria Park by 3 goals to 0 to secure the other spot in the final .

The final was a very intense game with some great soccer, but unfortunately for Milnerton, they were not able to turn the tables on a very talented Pinelands side
that went on to win 5 – 4 and take home gold for the third consecutive year. Well done to the Pinelands High team (Cape Town)
for taking their third consecutive victory.
