In a record breaking partnership between the Motsepe Foundation, SAFA and the Department of Basic Education, which amounts to over R117 million, school football has been given an unprecedented opportunity to develop in the country.

On 24 November 2015, the Motsepe Foundation announced a sponsorship amounting to R117,5 million over 10 years for the development of schoolsfootball, choral and traditional music and netball inpartnership with the Department of Basic Education.The Motsepe Foundation and the Department of Basic Education will today, 12 April 2016,  be launching and activating their 10 year Sponsorship Agreement. This initiative is also supported by the Department of Sports and Recreation, as well as the Department of Arts and Culture.

The KwaZulu-Natal under-19 Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Provincial soccer finals take place on 19th and 20th September at the Northdale Stadium in Pietermaritzburg where 12 regional finalists will battle it out to win the R100 000 as provincial champions and get the chance to compete in the national finals.

Free State’s budding young footballers will again have a chance to showcase their talents when one of the country’s premier youth football tournaments, the Engen Knockout Challenge, takes place at Grey College in Bloemfontein from 3-5 July 2015.

South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs’ forwards have struggled of late to consistently find the back of the net with an astonishing 15 goals scored in 30 matches. At times watching a local match can be one big yawn.

On the 8th of September, 2014 the Department of Sports and Recreation and Nestlé South Africa announced their partnership in a newly formed schools sports programme. The programme aims to develop football and netball skills of school-going children under the ages of 13.

Grey College has for decades been the leading rugby playing school in South Africa and continue to be a Springbok factory as they churn out great players year after year.

Soccer: DHS Roast College to Win Raw Cup!

The Raw Cup is a football trophy that the two oldest schools in the KZN province - Durban High School and Maritzburg College - compete for on a yearly basis.

 Glenwood played against Northwood at Northwood for the 3rd year running on the 27th August, 2014 in a close and tense match with an controversial ending.

St David’s Inanda host the St David’s Challenge Cup where some of the elite soccer teams from around the country will congregate for a football spectacular.

Despite being the most popular sport played in South Africa, football at school level has struggled to keep up with the likes of rugby and cricket with at best a small window of opportunity afforded the sport in the month of August.

In a short window between the end of the rugby season and the start of the cricket season a growing number of schools are embracing the most popular sport in the country and there are encouraging signs that school soccer is growing in popularity in all schools.

This week saw Powerade announce the names of the eleven South African schools who have won soccer Powerade Performance Sessions as part of the Powerade Schools Programme. The Performance sessions will be taking place from Monday, 4 August, to Monday, 15 September 2014, and will be hosted by ex-Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs captain, Neil Tovey.

Team Western Cape, selected from the 2014 Metropolitan U19 Premier Cup (MPC), left Cape Town International yesterday to compete in the Weifang Cup International Youth Tournament in Shandong, China.

Soccer: When Will Its Time Come?

The huge passion for soccer in this country is crying out for some direction to get our national team on track. It’s time for us to regain our former glory of winning the African Nations Cup in the 1990’s and build steadily towards the 2018 World Cup. The successful hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the 2013 African Cup of Nations, along with the hearty performances by the players, indicate that the stage has been set to take our beloved soccer team right to the top.

What began in 2005 as an ambitious vision to use the power of sport to bring about social change has since evolved into a thriving high schools soccer league programme that has now been implemented in seven provinces across South Africa.

14 year old, Gaby Salgado recently made her debut when she represented the U17 National Football Team in a match against Namibia in the Lucas Radabe Tournament.
