Profile: Player of the Week - Chad Solomon of Paul Roos

Mr. Chippie Soloman, the manager of the Stormers rugby team has been involved in rugby for over 32 years now but one of his proudest moments in his career happened last week when he handed this son Chad, his Craven Week colours.

Chippie Solomon was clearly moved by the occassion and described the ceremony as "Unbelievable, I was very emotional and his mother was almost in tears."

Chad Solomon who is 17 years old and attends Paul Roos Gim in Stellenbosch is a powerfully built player and has been selected to play at hooker for the WP U18 Craven Week team.

According to his father, Chad practically grew up  beside the rugby field.

"When he was little, he would fall asleep on the President of the Kuilsrivier team's chair.  He grew up playing rugby. In the wind or rain - until late in the evening."

Chad said he sometimes finds it difficult because of allegations that he was chosen on the influence of his father in rugby circles. "It is sometimes difficult, but then I decided people should rather see what I am capable of on the field."

His father's commitments to Western Province rugby means that he seldom actually watches Chad playing rugby these days.
"It's my job. I am away every second weekend, but his mother (Pearl) keeps me informed. She was always next to the field and will often just call from there to say how it went."

Chippie thinks there are now more opportunities for players of colour, but believes the school where they attend plays a major role.
"You can see when a school puts in extra effort, but it will still be a long time before the playing fields are completely equal."

Chad is a big fan of the Springbok Bismarck du Plessis and Kiwi Kevin Mealamu and hopes to someday pull the green and gold over his head.
