Rugby: Match Report- St.Andrews v Cambridge

The St Andrew’s College 1st XV were happy to be home again after a run of five away matches in a row.

The scene was set for a magnificent day of rugby with the weather playing along and Lower Field looking magnificent.

It didn’t take long for the St Andrew’s  1st XV to put their stamp on the game as a Jason Baggott’s line break led to Courtney Archer scoring next to the uprights for College, Ryan Horne converted and St Andrew’s  led 7-0. Cambridge hit back straight away with a penalty , reducing the score to 7-3. From then on it was all St Andrew’s College as they ran in three unanswered tries, Thomas Filmer, Ryan Horne and Tristan van Heteren all scoring for College. This gave St Andrew’s College a commanding 26-3 lead going into the break.

After the break the team looked as menacing as before looking to capitalise on any opportunity that presented itself. Thomas Filmer was the first to score in the second half rounding off a great line break by lock Tyler Paul from 40m out. This was followed by 2 more quick tries to Sintu Manjezi, a second to Horne, both scored brilliantly after some fantastic counter attack. The lead had stretched to 45-3. St Andrew’s College were running the ball from everywhere and this allowed Cambridge to capatalise on a College mistake and hack the ball through to score a consolation try, 45-10. However the St Andrew’s College team were not done and continued to attack running in 2 more tries, one to flanker Matt Andrews and another to replacement lock Peter Kroon. Both were converted and St Andrew’s  ran out the deserved victors 59-10.

Well done to all the College teams and to Cambridge for a fantastic day of rugby.
