Rugby: The Hot 100 Rugby Rankings

The unbeaten run continue for Paarl Gim and Affies who brushed aside this week’s opposition with very little worries.

Gimmies had what looked on paper like a tricky encounter against Boland Landbou who has been on a rebuilding phase this season. However Gimmies looked as professional as ever as they came close to registering another half century easily beating Boland 49-7. There is still a way to go until their season comes to an end but having played the majority of the country’s strongest opposition it looks like it is only Affies who could over take them.

Affies took on Glenwood in what turned out to be a very physical affair as predicted with the hosts not inclined to take a back foot on Dixons. However Affies looked superior in most areas of play to totally overturn the gallant KZN team 53-23 in a match that at times got very heated.

Grey College after a long break came back stronger than ever with a comprehensive victory over Grey High School 51-9. The match was tainted somewhat by the horrific injury to the Grey High School captain Martin Groenewald who fractured his leg and we wish him as speedy a recovery as possible.

The SA School’s Current Top 100

Over the season many queries come through regarding the rankings and how they are worked out and why the SA School Sports rankings differ at times from others. Whereas no ranking system if fool proof they do serve to give an indication of the strength of the various teams.

The SA School Sports Equation is based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of opposition : A critical factor which ensures that a team who plays stronger opposition is rewarded for their efforts
  • Teams are seeded: A the start of the season teams are ‘seeded’ depending on where they finished the previous season. This seeding allows a win to be graded if it was against weaker opposition. Therefore the bonus points accorded to a TEAM X who beats a lower seeded team TEAM Y would be less than if TEAM X had beaten a higher seeded team.
  • Margin of victory: The actual amount of points scored for and against are also included in the equation to allow close results or runaway results to be reflected accordingly.
  • Bonus Points: To achieve an “Average Points” Score a team receives points for a win, a draw, margin of victory and seeding differential. The combined points are divided by matches played.
