Rugby: Kearsney & Hilton Shares the Spoils

Rugby: Kearsney & Hilton Shares the Spoils Tracey van den Aardweg

Kearsney hosted Hilton on a steamy afternoon in front of a good crowd who were entertained to some physical and uncompromising rugby between these two old rivals.

This proved to be a close, exciting encounter, with both teams deserving to be commended on outstanding defence.

Kearsney took the lead with two penalties by scrum half Jordan Bamber. The visitors fought back and eventually number 8 Armstrong scored his converted try from a pick up from the base of the scrum for Hilton to take a 7- 6 lead.

Kearsney were unlucky to be called back for an alleged obstruction from a rehearsed attack play. The score remained the same, with the hosts not able to take advantage of the opportunities created.

Kearsney attacked well in the second half, but Hilton’s solid defence, coupled with a number of unforced Kearsney errors, kept the scoreboard at bay. Eventually the busy Kearsney number 8 Massimo Fierro scored from a quickly taken penalty deep in Hilton’s half.

Hilton scored their second try after collecting a loose ball with fly half Wilmans diving over under the posts, for an easy conversion and lead of 14-11.

Kearsney played a good territorial game and were eventually rewarded with another Bamber penalty, to level scores at 14-all. Both teams were unable to convert presented opportunities for the rest of the game; so that it ended in a draw, which perhaps the hosting team might have had the better of.

Outstanding players for Kearsney were centre Connor De Bruyn, #8 Massimo Fierro, flanker Aaron Smith, winger Derek Marshall and captain Oliver Carmody.
