Rugby Report: Westville v KES...WBHS Are Kicking Themselves!

Westville Boys' would have faced KES fully believing that they had the needed depth and skill to put away the Johannesburg side without too much fuss.

However what has to be remembered is that they had a week previously been involved in a mighty battle against Maritzburg College and they still are struggling to gain any advantage due to some ordinary kicking.

One can only imagine how well Westville would have done this year, with a team that boasts KZN Craven Week players, Fisher and Jackson, one would expect them to be challenging for a top 10 position.

Yet time and time again poor kicking has led to Westville not taking the lead and the match against KES was no exception.

Obviously this is a problem which the coaches at Westville tried to address by selecting Louis Snyman from the Westville U16A team as the designated kicker. But it was possibly a step too far for the youngster who did not have his most memorable match and the pressure told on his shoulders.

Take nothing away from KES who attacked the Westville defenders and looked to run on virtually every occasion and tactically they were the deserved winners. Big tackles and strong defence was evidence from both sides and the backlines worked well.

21-10 in favour of KES by the time the final whistle went and there was not much to choose between the two teams except for the kicking. KES kicked perfectly all day but Westville boy's were plagued by yet another inept performance with the boot and they conspired to miss every one of their kicks for points. This is fast becoming a season of "What if..." for WBHS.
