Rugby: KES Little Giants Unbeatable!

Rarely is there an article relating to any school boy team within any discipline under the age of 14. I mean so much changes from the time that kids get to that age, that a proper standard can never be evaluated or commented upon.

On Saturday the 20th of July, 2013 Trinityhouse's under 14, under 16 and 1st XV rugby teams played in the Beeld Cup finals for medium schools at Hoërskool Florida.

Ruan Potgieter, Falcons Craven Week Flyhalf, will be in the hunt for the SA Schools no 10 jersey when participating in... this year’s Craven Week in Polokwane.

Hamer Esterhuizen from Monnas will lead the Golden Lions Craven Week side in this year’s edition of Craven Week.

Monument have supplied the majority of the players for the U18 CW side with a total of nine players from the Gauteng powerhouse making the side. Florida also have a good representation with four getting the nod.

The Blue Bulls selectors looked mainly at Waterkloof, Affies and Garsfontein to form the backbone of their teams that will be playing in the various Youth Weeks this year.

Rugby: Tralies Fight Klofies to the End!

Hoërskool Waterkloof was not prepared for the onslaught of a very determined Hoërskool Sentraal. The final score was Waterkloof 25 and Sentraal 20.

When the school opened in 1921 ML Brink held a meeting of boys to find out what games they wanted to play. They all opted for soccer, as was the custom on the bare fields of the Highveld at the time, upon which Brink promptly decided that they would all play rugby!

Rugby: History of Affies Rugby & Team 2013

Affies is famed as one of the elite rugby schools in South Africa. It has produced many Springboks in the past and continues to supply talent to the SA Schools’ and SA Academy sides. Affies have a huge talent pool and is rich in depth.

Affies There are more than 10 senior teams each year, and at all ages teams as far as G-teams are filled up. Affies has not played in the Beeldtrofee rugby tournament since 2006, as its B to G teams would struggle to all play on a Saturday.

Each year Affies challenges the country’s leading rugby schools such as Grey College (Bloemfontein),

Maritzburg College (Pietermaritzburg), Glenwood High School, Hoërskool Noord-Kaap and many more. At these derby matches each and every team gets a chance to take the field against the Rooi, Geel en Groen.

Affies has produced top players such as Louis Schmidt, Wynand Olivier, Fourie du Preez and current Blue Bulls’ captain Pierre Spies (also an Affie choir boy!) to name but a few. Perhaps Affies’ most unknown star was Francois Swart who played flyhalf for Die Witbulle (the school’s first team) alongside scrum-half Fourie du Preez. The formidable duo later played for the Blue Bulls and were strong contenders to become the next Springbok halfback pairing. Tragically, Francois Swart

died in 2004, and since then Affies hosts an U15 rugby tournament during the Easter holidays bearing his name.

Rugby: Jeppe Boy's History & Team for 2013

Jeppe High is nearly as old as Johannesburg. The school was founded by the Church of England and in particular the church of St Mary’s the Less in Jeppestown. Jeppe and Johannesburg grew up together and the school had a great effect on the city over the years.

Affies will be hosting the Francois Swart U15 Rugby Week for the 10th time  as some of the finest U15 players assemble to once again pay tribute to one of Affies greatest sons FRANCOIS SWART 14 April 1982 – 2 January 2004

Waterkloof’s coaches Jan Mollentze, Burger Lindeque and Naas Botha has really taken time to nuture and develop Waterkloof’s 1st team. The coaches are now reaping the rewards with a string of good results.

Co-ed Schools & Rugby

Waterkloof in Pretoria, Monument in Gauteng, Paarl Gim in the Cape; co-ed government schools dominate rugby in some of the most influential regions of the country, yet KZN and the Eastern Cape seem strangely immune to this pleasing phenomenon.

KES Almost Awoken From Their Dream

The KES dream season almost came crumbling down before them when they faced Marais Viljoen this past weekend. In what was billed, and what I predicted, as a forgone conclusion as an easy win for KES, they had to dig deep in order to eventually pip Marais Viljoen 29-27. KES ran in 22 unanswered points in the second half to record their closest win of the season and to remain on course for that first unbeaten run in 31 years. KES retained their unofficial ranking of 3rd in the country but their result against a team way below them in the schools rankings has definitely created a nervous atmosphere amongst the Reds supporters in their bid to remain unbeaten.
