Squash: Kacey-Leigh Dodd Squash Star on the Rise

Kacey-Leigh Dodd who won the SA Closed Squash tournament in Johannesburg last month, certainly doesn’t lack any ambition. The talented teenager has immense potential and undoubtedly the ability to rise to the top of her sport.

Kacey1“This year, I would like to maintain my ranking and perform well with my provincial team in East London for our inter-provincial tour,” she explained. “I would like to attend the tour to Malaysia to play in their two upcoming tournaments. I want achieve the No. 1 ranking in SA for U19, and participate in the Worlds tournament. My further goals are to make an A or B side in the EP Jarvis team, and to achieve a senior national ranking to travel and get more exposure.”

Dodd, 16, enjoyed a strong start to the year with a good win at the weekend.

“The Joburg tournament was tough, it always has been challenging for people that aren't from the area and I'm no exception. It meant a lot to win the tournament and it was a huge reward for the focus I had to put into it. All together, the tournament was great fun. It was also exciting to be interviewed for the first time on TV.”

Reflecting on the standout memories from her career thus far, Dodd said: “The biggest highlights for me since I started squash would be the day I met Vanessa Atkinson, a former world champion, and my trip to America and Canada for the US and Canadian open tournaments. Both experiences were very eye-opening in terms of seeing the type of talent there is out there. I learned new things and had a fantastic time doing so.”

At such a young age, the sky certainly is the limit for the up-and-coming squash star as she continues on a learning curve in her career.

“I volley a lot and I'm quite quick to the ball,” she commented when asked about the strengths of her game. “I would like to improve my fitness and concentration. I sometimes lack these qualities and it affects a person’s game tremendously," Dodd added.
