Landslide Result for Oldest Field in SA

With over 17 000 votes cast in their favour which garnered them 60% of the vote it is once again Piley Rees of Bishops that takes the popular vote for the Best School Sports Arena in the country.

For spectacular vistas few would argue with Piley Rees taking the accolades but it is more than just a pretty face, history and tradition is also on its side.

The Piley Rees Field is named for the legendary schoolmaster and rugby coach who had been a master at Bishops from 1922 to 1967. He died in 1975 and the field was named after him in 1983.

In addition Bishops was the first school in South Africa and in the southern hemisphere to start playing rugby which also means that Piley Rees is the oldest rugby field in the country. It is a field that has arguably had the most matches played on it by the most players, many of which have gone on the play on other famous fields.

Herschelle Gibbs, Robbie Fleck, Dan Vickerman, Selborne Boome, Nizaam Carr and many others all plyed their trade on Piley Rees.

Yet for many other thousands, running onto a lush Piley Rees with a partisan crowd in full voice, will remain the highlight of their sporting career and a great honor to have played on such a field.
