KZN School Rugby Fixtures: 17 April 2010

With the Soccer World Cup resulting in a shortened second term, so much schoolboy rugby has already been played. For the purists however, the real season starts now and their anticipation is well-founded. A glance at the following fixtures is enough to make any rugby fan ditch the couch and head out to their local school field.

Warren Seals Kearsney Captain!

These are hallowed halls, political leaders were shaped here. These are enviable classrooms, market leaders were nurtured here. This is Stott field, Springboks and Sharks were born here. Kearsney College has unassumingly provided South Africa with leaders in all facets of society. From (former DA leader) Tony Leon to (JSE non-Executive Director) Andile Mazwai; Andrew Hudson to Trevor Halstead. They've even extended their influence to the British Isles (think Matt Stevens and inevitable England international, Brad Barritt). In Warren Seals, they have unearthed another leader with the potential to comfortably fall in the abovementioned bracket.

They don't come much bigger than this in the Eastern Cape, Dale College against Queens College in a match that is sure to bring out the best in the two rivals. Queens have had the better of the encounters in recent years having not lost since 2004 and with home ground advantage on Saturday they are going to be a tough team to crack.

Westville Boys Clean Up At KES 2010!

Over the Easter weekend Westville Boys' High School travelled up to Johannesburg to take part in the annual KES Easter Rugby Festival. Having come off two very good wins against Kearsney and Northwood, and an extensive pre-season program, the Westville boys were well prepared for the rigours of a tough tournament that would see them play 3 games in just 5 days.

Skonk Nicholson Festival Day 3

Results of the Skonk Nicholson Festival held at Maritzburg College on Day 3.

Organised rugby matches in South Africa will not be allowed to take place next year unless the participating coaches and match officials are BokSmart certified. The ruling was one of several decisions ratified by the provincial unions at the SARU Annual General Meeting on Friday. The impact of the new rules will be to improve rugby's safety record as part of the wide-ranging BokSmart national rugby safety programme.

Walking around Paarl Boys' High on a crisp Autumn morning is like heaven for a rugby lover. I still hold many a fond Copy_of_1110419_Maryke_mmemory of this grand old school from my playing days when we would trek out to Paarl to pit ourselves against some of the best of the Boland.
