Hockey: Somerset College Champs!

 

SOMERSET COLLEGE WIN CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS/CLUBS HOCKEY FESTIVAL

somerset1From the 18th to the 22nd of July Somerset College’s 1st Girls’ Hockey Team participated in the U18 Cape Town International Schools/Clubs Hockey Festival. The other teams that participated were: NSW Bushrangers (Australia), Paarl Gymnasium, Rhenish, Bergvliet, Chisipite College (Zimbabwe), Stellenberg, Edgemead, Windhoek HS (Namibia), Outeniqua, Bloemhof, Pinelands, Pretoria Girls’ High School, DF Malan, Parel Vallei and York School in George.

Somerset College started the tournament relatively slowly on Wednesday with a 3 – 3 draw against Stellenberg High School. The team then found their range for the last two pool matches, convincingly beating Chisipite College from Zimbabwe 6 – 0 on Wednesday afternoon and then on Thursday morning displayed formidable form beating Edgemead 15 – 0. On Sunday morning, in the semi-final the girls beat Paarl Gymnasium 2 – 0 which put them in the final against DF Malan on Sunday afternoon.

In the final there was fantastic support for the Somerset College team and they certainly produced a fine performance for the crowds, scoring 3 goals in the first half and 4 in the second to beat DF Malan 7 – 0. In a remarkable team effort Jade Batchelor, in the goals, pulled off some impressive saves to keep the opponents out. The Captain, Natasha Rootenberg, was judged the Player of the Tournament, and Megan Engelbrecht was the highest Goal Scorer of the Tournament, with ten goals to her name.
