Hockey: History of Wynberg BH & their 2013 Team

Hockey started at Wynberg in 1968, using the fields at the nearby Wynberg military camp. In one of those early games, a young Roy Clark was prevailed upon to try his luck at the sport and he ended up scoring 10 goals in his first game.

wynberg hNot surprisingly, he ended up seven years later in 1975 becoming Wynberg’s first international hockey player.

It would be another 20 years until the next Wynberg Old Boy attained international honours, when Wayne Denne attained the first of his 148 international caps. Since then, a further six Wynberg players have gone on to wear the Green and Gold. In 1976, Chris Hyland (the current patron of Wynberg Hockey) became the first Wynberg player to be selected for SA Schools – a trend which has continued to the present day.

The latest Wynberg boy to attain SA Schools’ hockey colours was Jason Smith in 2012. Without doubt, the single most significant factor in the development of hockey at the school was the commissioning of an artificial turf, which went down in 1998. No longer did schoolboy players have to learn their craft on the bumpy military field or on the school fields.

This led to an unprecedented growth in hockey numbers resulting in the “Dream Team” of 2004, which saw five Wynberg boys selected for the SA Schools’ team. Three of this team, Jonty Robinson, Rhett Halkett and Lloyd Norris Jones, together with Ian Haley, represented SA at the London Olympics in 2012. Recently, Rhett was announced as national captain.

Wynberg has also played a role in national umpiring and coaching circles with past SA coach, Paul Revington, currently coaching Malaysia.

The 2013 season sees the completion of a second artificial turf on the campus, ensuring that Wynberg retains its place as one of the premier hockey schools in South Africa.
