Hockey: Match Report- Selborne vs St Andrews College

The Xerox Selborne College 1st XI entertained St Andrew’s College in a match played in hot berg-wind conditions which were not ideal for top-level schoolboy hockey.

Nevertheless, both teams gave their all in a contest which was always extremely competitive with the result in doubt until late in the game.

The visitors got out of the blocks early and had the better of the first 10 minutes with some dangerous raids down the right which the Selborne defence was hard-pressed to repel. The home side gradually worked themselves into the match and gained some midfield control to begin applying pressure on the St Andrew’s circle.

After a couple of narrow misses, this was rewarded just before the break when good work by Njabulo Toni and Sandiso Mgcodo was completed by Lutho Lwana knocking an aerial ball in at the far post with an instinctive finish which enabled Selborne to lead 1-0 at half-time.

The second half was not particularly eventful, perhaps because of the weather taking its toll on the players. Selborne played with good defensive discipline to contain St Andrew’s in midfield and restrict them to occasional raids. With 10 minutes remaining, Selborne won a penalty corner and Keoghan Penhall scored with a good low drag which went off the post-man’s stick to the roof of the net.

St Andrew’s did their best in the remaining minutes to come back into the game but Selborne stood firm and showed composure in playing out the match for a hard-fought 2-0 victory. This encounter may not have always produced sparkling flowing hockey but the home side certainly showed great commitment and determination and their will-to-win gave them a deserved result against a talented St Andrew’s team.
