Hockey: Match report- Selborne v Grey

The Xerox Selborne 1st XI had won of their best wins over Grey College in recent years when they achieved a 4-1 victory in their home Derby on Saturday.

In a match played in hot conditions in front of a good crowd, the home side got off to a good start against their old rivals from Bloemfontein and controlled most of the play in the first half. Selborne showed good structure and ball-retention and were rewarded with field goals by Damon Thompson, Tyler Sims and Craig Morgan to take a 3-0 lead into the interval.

In the second half, the pace slowed slightly in the extreme heat and play evened out with Grey coming more into the game. The visitors had a good spell half-way through the period and reduced the deficit with an excellent drag-flick, but Selborne regrouped and added to the lead in the final minute when Dylan Billingham scored after an incisive solo run. This was a solid performance by the home team and a good start to the traditional Derby Day programme after their encouraging results at the pre-season Nomads Festival.
