Hockey: Match Report - Selborne v Dale

Written by  Tony Godding

The Xerox Selborne 1st XI earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory on a chilly Friday night 17th May, 2013,  in King William’s Town with a disciplined defensive effort against a talented and motivated Dale team.

Selborne always find the going difficult at Dale College and this is their first victory there in 3 seasons, the 2 previous years producing draws

This was a match in which the home side, spurred on by a vociferous and enthusiastic crowd, had the majority of possession and circle-entries but could not apply the finishing touch. Selborne took the lead half-way through the first

half when Dylan Billingham converted a penalty-stroke and then showed good composure and high work-rate in maintaining the lead against the considerable pressure exerted by Dale.

Selborne had a couple of good chances to increase the lead with quick counter-attacks but did not finish and the score remained unchanged in the second period. Both goalkeepers played well with John Kachoko making

two important saves to keep the Selborne goal intact.

This was a display that showed the character and determination of the Selborne team in overcoming the spirited Dalians who might feel that the hockey they

produced on the night deserved a better result.
