Hockey: Match Report Queen's v Selborne

Written by  Tony Godding

The Xerox Selborne 1st XI suffered their first loss since March 2012 when they went down 2-1 at Queen’s College on Saturday. It was a closely- contested match in which Queen’s made better use of their opportunities and defended with composure when protecting their lead.

Queen’s opened the scoring in the 6th minute after a goalmouth scramble when Selborne failed to clear their circle after a mis-hit penalty corner. They extended their lead later in the half when Selborne were turned over on their defensive left and Queen’s rapidly countered and exploited the man-over to score from the left of the circle. Selborne also had a couple of good scoring chances in the half, but were unable to convert.

In the second period, Selborne had a slight edge in possession and territory but battled to break down the determined Queen’s team who took very few chances in their own half. Selborne eventually got on the board 6 minutes from the end when a long pass by Sarvesh Naidoo was turned in on the right post by Damon Thompson.

The visitors threw everything into attack in the closing stages, but a resolute Queen’s defence resisted their efforts and closed out what was a deserved win on the day for the home side.
