The Xerox Selborne College 1st XI came out on top in an excellent game of fast-paced schoolboy hockey against their old rivals from King William’s Town when they edged home 3-2 to complete their second single-goal victory over Dale College this season.

Selborne had the better of the first half and went ahead after 10 minutes when Alex Penhall scored from a penalty corner with a well-executed drag-flick. The lead was doubled 5 minutes from half-time by Dylan Billingham’s conversion of a penalty stroke awarded

when Craig Morgan was brought down by the Dale goalkeeper.

Dale were not daunted by their deficit and came back strongly after the break. Selborne did not start the second half well and Dale took advantage to score twice in the first 11 minutes, a second-phase penalty corner strike being followed by a well-finished field goal. The game swung from end-to-end, keeping the good crowd entertained by the quality of the hockey, and after 19 minutes, Selborne regained the lead when Penhall finished a penalty corner variation with a strong shot past the Dale keeper. Dale threw everything into attack in the closing minutes, but Selborne showed good composure and control in playing out the match for a narrow

but deserved victory in their final home game of a season in which they have won every match played on their home turf.
