Hockey: Match Report- Selborne vs Grey College

Written by  Tony Godding

The Xerox Selborne College 1st XI delighted a good Friday night home crowd with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Grey College to record their 4th successive victory in this long-standing fixture. But it was by no means easy; there was never much separating the 2 well-matched sides and the match was always in the balance until the very end.

After a first half in which Selborne had a slight edge and had taken the lead after 20 minutes when Lutho Lwana scored after a well-constructed move down the right, the defining moment of the match came straight after half-time when a sweeping counter-attack resulted in Njabulo Toni netting with a skilful reverse-stick dink to give Selborne a 2 goal cushion.

Grey continued to give as good as they got and as the second period wore on, the home team had to cede some midfield control to the visitors and this cost them when Grey scored from a penalty corner hit which was deflected by a defender over the logging goalkeeper. Grey now redoubled their efforts but some doughty defence by Selborne weathered the storm, with keeper Emmanuel Kachoko playing a prominent role with some outstanding saves. He was undoubtedly Selborne’s man of the match.

Selborne can take pride in their victory but Grey can hold their heads high for their part in a most entertaining game of top schoolboy hockey which kept the enthusiastic crowd on tenterhooks throughout. Well done to both teams.
