Girls Hockey: This Week's SA Schools Rankings: 12/08/2016

In what has fast become one of the premier events on the Schools Hockey calendar, Oranje Meisies once again hosted the cream of SA’s hockey teams in the FNB Private Wealth Super 12 Tournament.

It is a tournament that really puts the rankings under a great deal of scrutiny and SA Schools Sport are proud to say that the two teams ranked at the top of the table going into the tournament also fought their way in to the final match.

Oranje Meisies vs St Mary’s Waverley was what the SA Schools Rankings predicted right from the start and the final lived up to its billing as the biggest match of the 2016 season. With these two giants of school hockey locked at 0-0 at half-time both teams came out to play in the second half with all they had.

Oranje ever relentless on attack finally broke through the tenacious St Mary's Waverley defence when Simone Gouws clocked in with a brace of well-taken goals inside two minutes!

St Mary's Waverley fought back bravely and a series of inspirational attacks were handsomely rewarded when Julia Fleming pulled one back amidst unbridled shouts of joy from the St Mary's faithful!

However it was not to be for this incredibly brave St Mary's Waverley side under captain Hannah Pearce (who was awarded Player of the Tournament) and it was the Oranje girls who made it a hat-trick of titles in this action-packed magnificent tournament.

Well done to both winners Oranje and finalists St Mary's for putting on a superb contest.

FINAL SCORE!

Oranje 2 St Mary's Waverley 1

This result cements Oranje at the top of the SA School’s Rankings for this week and it looks like that is where they will remain for yet another year!
