Despite the damp weather, the encounter on the day was anything but dull! A spirited Grey team, worth their spurs and having claimed a College scalp or two in the age-groups previously, came out quite strong against College with an aggressive offence from the opening whistle. The College XI, however, controlled the best part of the opening minutes. After some good patches of possession, Nicholas Pio opened the College account for the year with a stunning reverse stick goal after he disposed a Grey defender and converted his own run into the circle.
Only two minutes later College captain, Bradley Sherwood, found space exactly where Pio had unleashed his belter only minutes ago. The resulting reverse stick shot was well-helped into goal by the superbly positioned Bruce Spence, and College were 2-0 up after 13 minutes. Not be outdone, Grey continued to press on and a mixed patch of hockey ensued with both teams exchanging the share of possession, with College squandering two penalty corners thanks to some tidy goalkeeping from Grey. On the stroke of half-time, Grey’s resilience showed result and won a penalty corner which they converted to take the momentum into half time 2-1. Intensity mounted into the second half, with some quality running hockey on offer, but neither team really bothering the elusive circles.
College turned the tide in the 42nd minute, however, when Sherwood put a precision 15 metre pass through to Spence who put his second goal easily into the net to see College 3-1 up. This goal and cushion seemed to settle the College XI and better patches resulted in the following minutes. In the 48th minute Pio again was in the action with a solid cross that found strikers Anthony Glutz and Spence. The double-deflection (which will no doubt be a contender for goal of the season) from Glutz and, then Spence, gave College a 4-1 margin and Spence rounding off his hat-trick! Finally in the 56th minute, Sherwood and Glutz combined for the final goal after turning Grey over from the press. After the pass into the circle, Glutz gracefully chipped the advancing goalkeeper for a fine finish and a lead of 5-1.
The game remained out of Grey’s hands in the final minutes and handed College a fine win and well-earned win on the opening day of the 2017 Hockey season.
