HOCKEY: Match Report: Maritzburg College v Northwood Matt Marshall Photography

College visited Northwood this weekend and met a well-respected Durban team. It was always going to be a challenge to win convincingly at Northwood after a hard fought 1 - 0 the previous week.

College seemed to be up to the task with the College Captain Tyson Dlungwana opening the scoring in the 1st minute. There were a few exchanges between the two teams and an opportunity for Northwood to draw level, but College Goalkeeper Owen Sithole, in his first outing for the 1st XI, was equal to the task.

College then scored a second goal through forward Amkelwa Letuka, with a good counter for the visiting team. The match went into the break 2 - 0 in favour of College.

Shortly after the 2nd half commenced, College put away their 3rd goal which was scored by striker Michael Forrest. College looked like they were now in the driving seat with a 3 goal cushion, but this was not to be. With an error in midfield from College, Northwood went on the counter and were awarded a penalty corner what was will converted with a penalty corner variation, bringing the score to 3 - 1.

Thinking Northwood gifted themselves a life line, College responded almost immediately, with the fourth coming from midfielder Gareth Herselman, with a scramble on the left post and college getting the final touch in.

With a few minutes left on the clock, College were awarded a penalty stroke for an infringement on the goal line. Defender Courtney Halle stepped up and made no mistake, converting the stroke to take the game to a final tally of 5 - 1 to Maritzburg College.
