Hockey: Match Report- Kearsney v St. Stithians.

After a lengthy period of travelling and various incidents on the road, Kearsney’s 1st XI side took on St Stithians on a chilly Johannesburg evening on the 17th of May.

kc1The match was played at a hectic pace for the first few minutes with both teams having scoring chances at either end.

It was Saints who drew first blood after Kearsney failed to clear the ball out of their circle. The Saints strikers pounced on the ball, giving the Kearsney goalkeeper no chance of keeping the ball out of the net. Saints looked the more decisive side when on attack and went into the break one goal up.

After the break Kearsney wasted no time in drawing level with a well taken short corner, when Ru Baker drag-flicked the ball low into the bottom left corner. Moments later Kearsney were on the score sheet again when captain Ryan Wallace scored a field goal to put Kearsney into the lead.

Kearsney could have wrapped up the game but squandered a number of simple chances and Saints were kept in the game by some brilliant saves by their goalkeeper who had an outstanding game.

With the score at 2 – 1, Saints converted a short corner when the defensive line failed to clear their lines, setting up an exciting last few minutes for the appreciative crowd. Kearsney then put everything into attack and were rewarded for their adventurous play when they were given a penalty corner. Ru Baker completed a carbon copy of his first goal to seal the match.

Both sides played exiting end to end hockey with Kearsney dominating circle entries throughout the game, but struggled to convert their chances. All in all a good performance from both sides which was certainly enjoyed by the crowd.

Goalscorers: Ru Baker (2), Ryan Wallace (1)
