Hockey: Match Report- Kearsney College vs Northwood

The Kearsney College first hockey team had a challenging fixture versus Northwood this past Saturday. Two weeks ago they played Northwood in a night league semi final and beat them 8-0 in a game where everything went to plan for them but perhaps  Northwood weren’t at their best that evening as  they are a much better side then that score line reads.

The challenge going into this past Saturday fixture against them was to not allow for any complacency to creep in and also take into account that Northwood are a proud school and would be desperate to reverse that night league score line especially on their old boys day.

The game on Saturday started off at a very slow tempo with Kearsney dictating play but at the same time being very careless in possession and allowing for Northwood to counter on their errors! Eventually Kearsney won their first penalty corner which was saved on the goal line by a Northwood defender but then re-awarded for another foot.

Ru Baker then stepped up again and converted with a powerful flick into the bottom corner. A minute later Kearsney were very sloppy in their defensive circle and gave away a penalty corner which Northwood converted to even the game at 1-1.

Kearsney continued to control the game and Lyle Hewitson was able to convert a very well taken field goal allow KC to go 2-1 up and shortly after that, James Stamatis converted from a penalty corner to take them into half time 3-1 up!

The second half followed a similar pattern as the first half, where both teams created chances and Jayme Crouch in the Keasney goals made some great saves and at the other end of the pitch Jeremy Foord was able to convert a great team goal that came through a baseline entry and Stamatis with the assist. Matthew Lees finished off the game with a very well taken goal on the baseline to wrap up the game for Kearsney at 5-1.

Credit must go to  Jeremy Foord, Luke De Vlieg. Keanan Naidoo and Guy Morgan, the Kearsney youngsters who have come into the team this week due to some of their senior players being injured ( Nortje, Di Marco and Rencken).
