Hockey: Match Report- Glenwood v Maritzburg College

Glenwood travelled inland to face Midland rivals Maritzburg College on the weekend of the celebration of their 150th anniversary. This was a much anticipated encounter as both teams have enjoyed success so far this year.

glenvmcCollege started the better of the 2 teams, making full use of the astro with Glenwood taking their time to settle. In the 6th minute, College’s pressure paid off when they were awarded a penalty corner. Glenwood keeper Michael Labuschagne pulled off an acrobatic save to keep the scores level and this seemed to spark the boys in green into action. With most of the game being played in the College half, it came against the run of play when College managed a quick counter-attack that left Glenwood’s right flank exposed to allow 2 College strikers in behind our defence who then clinically finished off the move. At the break, the score remained 1-0 to College, despite the territory possession to Glenwood.

The 2nd half was a far more frenetic encounter. Both teams worked hard to gain the advantage. As the game became more physical, the umpires had to step in a number of times to keep young heads calm. Mention must be made of Tanner Bottomley who worked tirelessly and captain Callan Pearce who lead from the front, putting his body on the line when needed.

Glenwood squandered a number of scoring opportunities throughout the 2nd half and were made to pay when the College unit worked the ball up the astro to their striker who had an attempt at goal, only to miss the ball completely. Despite the “freshie” in the circle, the umpires waved play on and the same striker then crossed the ball to the far post to an unmarked College boy who tapped the ball in.

After College’s 2nd goal it was all one-way traffic with Glenwood pressing hard for a goal. With 6 minutes remaining, Glenwood were finally awarded their 1st penalty corner. Keegan Hezlett executed “The German” well and Andile Phehlukwayo made no mistake in finishing off the move with a well taken drag-flick into the bottom corner.

Although Glenwood pushed hard for the equaliser, College did well to manage the remaining 5 minutes and took the spoils 2-1. Youngsters, Matthew Kirkham and Keegan Hezlet stood out at the back whilst Jason Reed was his usual commanding self in the middle of the park.
