Hockey: Belgotex Sport Kearsney Hockey Fives Tournament

Hockey 5’s is a new international hockey format that was introduced by the FIH (Federation of International Hockey) to grow the excitement and exposure of the sport by offering a fast-paced, high-intensity equivalent of the game.

The simplified version of the traditional eleven-a-side game sees five players a side, on half the regulatory sized hockey pitch and an addition of boundary walls. Based on the format of the highly successful T20 Cricket and Sevens Rugby, it’s hoped that these modifications provide a more exhilarating and enjoyable game for both players and spectators.

Hockey 5’s has gained a lot of traction around the world in recent years, making its debut at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Following on from the success it enjoyed at these Games, it will be returning to the upcoming Olympic Games in 2018! In South Africa, the game has been gradually growing and gaining attention as more and more schools, clubs and franchises now offer Hockey 5’s.

Kearsney College, together with Belgotex Sport, the leading synthetic sports turf manufacturer in the country, will be hosting the much-anticipated Belgotex Sport Kearsney Hockey Fives Tournament. The event is the first major 5’s tournament on the South African schools’ calendar and will take place over the mid-term holiday in August. Some of the country’s top young players will be able to showcase their talents, and with eight high schools and thirteen primary schools competing from around the country, it’s gearing up to be an action-packed weekend of Hockey 5’s.

Belgotex Sport have always been highly involved with South African hockey, and it’s great to see them supporting this fresh new approach to the game.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Kearsney in the past and we’re really excited to be partnering with them on this momentous occasion for school hockey. Kearsney are known for their excellent sporting festivals and we have no doubt that this is going to be one for the books.” -  Ayden Shrives, managing director of Belgotex Sport

All around the country, Belgotex Sport have supplied many institutions with a variety of multi-purpose, synthetic grass for various sporting set-ups, such as indoor soccer turfs, rugby pitches, hockey fields, lawn bowls, tennis courts and golf putting greens. Kearsney College is just one of their satisfied customers.

“After extensive research and a thorough process, Kearsney College selected Belgotex to replace our synthetic surface in 2011. I can honestly say that we made the right decision. The surface is superb and our world-class facility is used for numerous inter-provincial and even international fixtures. An added advantage is that Belgotex is a local company and we receive fantastic after-sales service and support from them.” – Wayne Marsden, Master in Charge of hockey at Kearsney College

This is an exciting time for school hockey in South Africa and it’s going to be great to see up-and-coming talent rise through the ranks, and hopefully, represent South Africa on a Hockey 5’s international level.
