Hockey: Match Report- Pretoria Boy's v KES

Written by  Harry Todd

It was Founders days at Pretoria Boys High on Saturday, 1st June 2013, and Hill Astro played host to KES on the 112th birthday of PBHS.

The game was umpired by two international officials in John and Peter Wright.

PBHS were on the score sheet early on with a deflection from a short corner (scored by Marc Knoetze), a second goal , by captain Khumo Mokale, was scored soon afterwards after a goal mouth scramble.

Another short corner resulted in a drag-flick goal by Daelon Campbell . KES responded with a well taken drag flick to leave the half time score at 3-1 to the home side.

The second half started well for KES and they managed to get back two goals through a field goal and another drag flick  to level scores at 3-3.

An amusing incident took place in the PBHS “D”, Boys High players were convinced that the ball had hit a KES players foot before hitting a Boys High player, John Wright was obscured and adjudicated a short corner to KES. PBHS captain informed umpire (John Wright) that the ball had struck a KES player first, John enquired “which foot?”, PBHS captain replied “right foot!”, John replied “Bad luck, today we are playing the left foot rule”

Matters got worse for Boys High as two players were given yellow cards in close succession and were down to 9 players with 10 minutes remaining – this however seemed to spur them on and they scored 3 field goals in the remaining time (Ashley Kemp, Tyler Easton and Llewellyn Strydom) to close the game out at 6-3 to the home side.
