Hockey: Latest Rankings- Wynberg No.1

The match between Northwood and Maritzburg College was billed as the “Battle for KZN”, the undisputed Kings of KZN for the past few decades, Maritzburg College and the new kids on the block Northwood.

One of the big matches this weekend had to be the Northwood v Maritzburg College clash the ended the Knights unbeaten run and sent a message that Maritzburg College are back to their best.

As part of their 50th Year Celebrations St.Alban’s are putting on a feast of hockey in the form of the U16 and First XI Independent Schools Festival.

Northwood vs Maritzburg College – cracker of a hockey match in store. The success of the Northwood first hockey team in winning 12 matches from 12 starts is a fantastic achievement and can be put down in large part to the school’s appointment a few years ago of Darryn Gallagher as director of hockey.

Hockey: SA's Top 25 Hockey Rankings

Among the many matches that were played out over the past week it was perhaps the Wynberg v Rondebosch and Pretoria Boy’s High v Maritzburg College clashes that were the most eagerly anticipated.

The hockey season promises to deliver some spectacular play and already we are seeing some traditional powerhouses losing ground to other teams who have seemingly closed the gap.

Grey Hockey was born in 1961, when a team of keen juniors, captained by Colin Hilder and coached by Roy Sutcliffe and Bruce Allen, was entered in the Men’s Leagues under the banner of the Old Grey Club.

Hockey: Boy's Hockey Rankings

The hockey season has exploded into a very tight contest this season with several teams causing some shock results against the traditionally stronger teams. The many festival matches that have been recently played were hotly contested and allowed us to get a feel for the type of form in the teams.

Hockey started at Wynberg in 1968, using the fields at the nearby Wynberg military camp. In one of those early games, a young Roy Clark was prevailed upon to try his luck at the sport and he ended up scoring 10 goals in his first game.

Nomads Hockey Festival Day 1 Match Reports

Hockey made a brief appearance at College in 1927 before disappearing off the scene. Years later in 1961, the school gained considerable prestige when D Ryder and E Eckstein were both selected for Natal and SA Schools’, Ryder being chosen as the captain of the latter side while only in Fifth Form.

Hockey was first played at King Edward VII School in 1959 and from those humble beginnings in King Edward’s has grown into one of the formidable hockey schools in South Africa, with a proud hockey history and tradition.

keshOver the years, King Edward’s has produced a total of 16 players who have achieved national colours at senior level including Gregg Clark, who, at the culmination of the 2004 Olympic Games, became SA’s most capped hockey international with 250 appearances. He was later appointed as the SA men’s national coach and he also coached the Ranchi Rhinos to victory in the inaugural Indian Hockey League.

Another Old Boy and ex-national player and SA Indoor hockey captain, Steve Jaspan, was a member of the Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for many years and currently chairs the FIH High Performance & Coaching Panel. Steve was also Chairman of the School’s Governing Body for many years. Recently, Thornton McDade has represented SA at World Cups in Germany and as well the Beijing and London Olympics.

At schoolboy level, King Edward’s regularly produces a large portion of the Southerns Schools’ provincial teams and regular representatives of the SA Schools team.

Secrets To Top SA School Coach's Success

IT is well-known that only a tiny fraction of South African school first team sports players go on to make national teams in their chosen code.

THE organiser and founder of the hugely successful Cape Town International U18 Schools’ and Clubs Hockey Festival is looking for the top South African boys’ and girls’ high school first teams to take part in next year’s 10th anniversary of the event, which is taking place from July 16 to 21 in 2013 at the festival's Hartleyvale Hockey Stadium headquarters and surrounding hockey turfs.

Talking to Selborne College hockey players Dylan Billingham and Sarvesh Naidoo, there is no doubting their ambition to succeed at the highest level of the game.

Representing your province in sport is always a great honour, doing it in two diverse sport codes at the age of only 16, is an amazing achievement exclusive to an elite few young sportswomen in South Africa. Here is Talya Cartwright’s remarkable succsess story.

St. Mary’s Waverly and St. Andrew's  had fought bravely to get both their U16 and U18 teams into the finals of the Howell and Pullen Trophies respectively.

St. Mary’s Waverly are looking to clinch the Howell Pullen trophy this weekend after enjoying great success so far in the competition.
